Why We Play

I recently watched the documentary, "Through The Fire" starring NBA point guard Sebastian Telfair. The documentary showed the life of one of Americas greatest high school basketball players before he was chosen to be in the NBA. This movie brought me a lot of memories and mixed emotions. It really made me realize why we all play the game of basketball. Every ball player has a dream to play in the NBA, but only a select few actually make it. We all put in countless hours of our adolescence to try and achieve greatness. We all dream to play on national TV and to buy our moms a five bedroom house outside the city.

The movie just reminded me of how simple it was to dream, when I was a kid. In 1997, I could be anything from a rap star to a brain surgeon. Somewhere along the line, we all forgot how to dream and let "reality" sneak up on us.

The last scene in the documentary has Sebastian's elementary school brother, working out at five o' clock in the morning. The oldest brother says," If you wanna be better than Sebastian, then you're going to have to work harder than him." This is the perfect ending to the documentary because it shows the full circle in the game of basketball. Some cats will make it, and some will die trying, but at the end of the day, the dream lives on.

Check Em' Out: The Cool Kids

If you consider yourself a true Hip-Hop fan, than you will enjoy The Cool Kids. The group consists of two Midwestern 80s-obsessed lyricists. The duo's style is unlike any one's in the game. They rap with simplistic flows but it's a lot more complex than one would think. The rappers talk about regular things that young people live for. Sneakers, new gear, and video games replace the normal, guns, bitches, and money. Some songs y'all should check out are, "Gold and a Paper", "88'", and "A Little Bit Cooler." The two MCs have similar music sounds to early Rakim mixed with some Pharrell. Don't miss out on this group. I wouldn't mention the kids if they weren't legitimate. They been in the game for a while and I've known about them for a while but I thought I'd let y'all know.
